What We Provide

Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center is one of 21 regional centers that are chartered in California state law and together serve more than 250,000 individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Established in 1966 as a pilot regional center, Lanterman Regional Center is a private, nonprofit corporation that operates under contract with state government. We serve a specific geographic area, and are governed by a community-based board of directors, which includes individuals with developmental disabilities, family members and community leaders.

The Regional Center is the coordinating hub for the developmental services system, and as such, is a critical partner with service providers, clients and families in their efforts to support people with developmental disabilities to live independent, productive and satisfying lives. The Regional Center receives funding from the State for two purposes:

  • Purchase of Service (POS): Purchasing services and supports for clients and their families from community service providers. Purchase of service funding accounts for approximately 87 percent of the regional center budget.
  • Regional Center Direct Services: Intake and Assessment, Service Coordination, Advocacy, Clinical Services, Family Support, ensuring that our Community Services Network meets the needs of our clients and families, Client Benefit Coordination, Fiscal Monitoring, and Training of families and service providers. This funding also supports operations of the Regional Center.

What services the regional center may purchase, for whom and under what circumstances are guided by the center’s Purchase of Services Policy and Service Standards. Please click here to view these documents.
