Ventura County Star (CA) - 7/30/2015

July 30--LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Thousand Oaks resident Erik Fido, the only athlete representing Ventura County in the Special Olympics World Games, won a silver medal in the team bowling competition.

Fido, 29, in a team with three other American players, came in second place with a combined three-game score of 1,605. A Canadian team won gold with 1,834 points.

The team bowling competition took place Tuesday and the results were announced Wednesday. Fido also won a sixth place ribbon in the doubles competition.

"He's really proud of his medal," Fido's mother, Noel Stevens, said Wednesday.

Fido, who developed an interest in bowling through a Conejo Recreation and Park District program, has been participating in Olympics activities in Los Angeles every day since the opening ceremonies on Saturday.

Stevens said it was an incredible experience to attend and see her son at the Los Angeles Coliseum ceremony.

"You can see them coming out of the tunnel and the team chanting 'USA, USA.' I cried," she said. "It was just so unbelievable."

Fido will bowl again Thursday in the singles competition with results expected to be announced Friday. Check vcstar.com for updates.
