The LightWRITER SL35/BigKeys is a hand-held, dual-display keyboard communicator designed for use by individuals with speech and communication disabilities. The device is designed for desktop use and consists of a keyboard with extra large keys for individuals with motor and visual disabilities. The keyboard is arranged alphabetically for individuals just learning how to spell or for individuals who have difficulty using the standard typewriter layout. A vacuum fluorescent display and a liquid crystal display are featured on this model: one display faces the person typing, and the other faces the message recipient. A DECtalk Speech Synthesizer is included to allow phone conversations, and a speaker on the top of the device makes it easier to listen to the speech output. A memory unit permits storage of lists, such as address files, or of a frequently used message, and the screen can prompt words for selection by sight. Control keys include backspace and clear keys for correcting mistakes, a replay key for rerunning messages, and a buzzer key for attracting attention. A keyguard and "raincoat" are standard on this model. POWER: Uses rechargeable batteries. DIMENSIONS (LxW): The keyboard is 11 x 5 1/8 inches, and the keys are 0.75-inch square with one-inch spacing.
