BRIEF: Shooting the Shot: Rhythms of Independence

News Herald - 8/30/2018

Aug. 30--PANAMA CITY -- On this week's Shooting the Shot with Patti and Josh, we discuss Joshua Boucher's photo story on DJ Franklin, a local 23-year-old with cerebral palsy. The story ran in the News Herald on July 27, and is available on our website.

While photojournalists at most newspapers spend most of their days photographing events that will run with other journalists' writing, at the News Herald we budget for both our photographers to make multiple stories a year that they write and photograph. These are usually longer narratives that can take months of reporting, traveling and photographing to make.

In June and July of this year, Boucher followed DJ Franklin, a local with physical and intellectual disabilities. In his photo story, he shows a day in Franklin's life. In the accompanying article he goes into more detail on Franklin's life up until this point.

In the podcast you can learn more about Boucher's process in finding the story, making the photographs and why it is important. Download the podcast from our website, NewsHerald.com, and be sure to subscribe.
