Sheriff's office participating in Project Lifesaver

Aug. 23--Project Lifesaver tracking devices are offered at no cost to families with those who may have autism, Down syndrome, dementia, Alzheimer's or another type of cognitive impairment that puts them at risk for wandering or becoming lost.

The transmitters emit a tracking signal that allows at-risk individuals to be located quickly after going missing.

At-risk populations enrolled in the program receive a wrist or ankle bracelet with an individualized tracking signal. If they go missing, their caregiver notifies the Wayne County Sheriff's Office through the Wayne County 911 Center for a trained emergency team response. Most who wander are found within a few miles from home, and the Project Lifesaver technology can reduce search time from hours or days to minutes.

Police departments in New York City and Nassau County have this system, as well as sheriff's offices in 48 counties: Albany, Allegany, Broome, Cattaraugus, Cayuga, Chautauqua, Chenango, Clinton, Columbia, Cortland, Delaware, Erie, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Genesee, Greene, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Madison, Montgomery, Niagara, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Orange, Oswego, Otsego, Putnam, Rensselaer, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Schuyler, Seneca, St. Lawrence, Steuben, Suffolk, Sullivan, Tompkins, Ulster, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Westchester and Yates.

Wayne County received the Project Lifesaver system through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, in partnership with Project Lifesaver International and the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
