BRIEF: Wichita theater offers 'sensory-friendly' movies for kids with special needs

July 03--For children with autism, sensory disorders or other special needs, theaters can be scary places -- the dark environment and ear-splitting audio, combined with policies that require moviegoers to stay seated and quiet, can make movie outings difficult for them and their families.

Fortunately, the Regal Cinemas "My Way Matinee" series offers sensory-friendly movies in Wichita.

The next one, "Ant-Man and the Wasp," will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday July 7 at the Warren West, 21st and Tyler. Tickets are $6.50.

During the sensory sensitive shows, which began in Wichita in 2012, the theater lowers the volume and turns the house lights on. Audience members are allowed to move around, talk, dance or sing during the show.

Upcoming shows include "Hotel Transylvania 3" on July 14 and "Christopher Robin" on Aug. 4.
