Char's Landing to host Special Olympics FUNdraiser

Alberni Valley Times - 1/25/2018

Everyone in the community is invited to an evening of music, food and fellowship at Char's Landing on Sunday, Jan. 28.

And one hundred percent of the funds raised are going towards a good cause.

This is the third annual Special Olympics FUNdraiser at Char's Landing, organized by Special Olympics volunteer coordinator Anne Evans and Shaw TV host Nancy Wilmot.

The fundraiser is also a birthday party for Wilmot.

Wilmot volunteers in a number of areas in the community, and she wanted to combine that with a birthday celebration.

"I find that if you concentrate in one area, you can make a big impact," said Wilmot. "This one was an easy one to focus on."

Port Alberni has been offering Special Olympics programs in the community since 1984, with sports like five pin bowling, floor hockey, figure skating, softball, swimming and more.

As Wilmot pointed out, many of the programs and events are free of charge.

"But those smiles have a price tag," she said.

The Special Olympics FUNdraiser will take place on Sunday from 6-9 p.m. The night will feature music, dancing and tapas at $5 a plate. Silent auction items will be available, and admission is by donation. Local musician Lance Lapointe will also be in attendance.

"We try to have different artists every year," said Wilmot. "[Lapointe] is such a good local musician."

Wilmot says the event is growing in popularity every year. In the past, the fundraiser has raised about $6,000 per year for the Port Alberni Special Olympics.

"Not bad for a one night birthday party," said Wilmot.
