Scene: Good Shepherd Fall Classic benefits pediatric unit

Oct. 07--The Good Shepherd Fall Classic for Pediatrics on Sept. 11 at Lehigh Country Club in Lower Macungie Township raised more than $175,000 for Good Shepherd Pediatrics, which provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for children with autism, developmental delays and physical disabilities and those recovering from accidents, injuries or illnesses.

The tournament featured 112 golfers, 16 tennis players and 10 pickleball players. It was re-named the Fall Classic to recognize the three tournaments.

Paul Emrick won the Bob Ford Volunteer Leadership Award, named in memory of Bob Ford, a long-time Good Shepherd supporter who was involved in the tournament since the 1980s. The award is given to an individual who demonstrates a personal commitment to Good Shepherd's mission and values, serves as an ambassador in the community and demonstrates exceptional leadership on Good Shepherd's behalf. Emrick has been Good Shepherd trustee since 2015.

"Paul has been a steadfast supporter of Good Shepherd," said John Kristel, Good Shepherd president and CEO. "This is his second consecutive year to chair the tournament. His efforts have helped to ensure the event's success, and he was chosen to receive the Bob Ford Volunteer Leadership Award because of his ongoing contributions."

Specialty contest winners included: Closest to the Pin: Trevor Reid; Longest Drive, Men: Luke Smith; Longest Drive, Women: Karen Andrews; Straightest Drive: Mark Erickson, and Pot of Gold: Bob Yapsuga and Joe Scheller. John Yurconic and Pete Kareha won the Putting Contest.

The first place gross foursome included Jim Stillittano, Andre Reed, Dion Reed and George Sucher. Greg Butz, Mike Butz, Steve Butz and Fernando Perez took first place net, and second place net went to Ken Duerholz, Karen Andrews, Jim Trinkle and Mark Waverka. John Kristel, Tim Riley, Joe and Rita Scheller were awarded the "Most Honest" foursome.

The winners of the golf tournament received gift cards to the Lehigh Country Club pro shop.

Bob Springer and Rich Underwood took first place in the tennis contest. In the pickleball court, Dale Inlander, Dottie Kelly, Mike Schiffer and Annie Sweeney were the victors.

Emrick served as event chairman for the second year. Committee members included JoAnne Bergandino, John Caviston, Gary Clewell, MaryAnn Federico, Julia Gerancher, Andrea Jones, Chris Lakatosh, Bob Makos, Jaime Mendes, Richard Migash, Ina Nechita, Maureen O'Meara, Bob Springer and Tom Sweeney. O'Meara, with HMK Insurance, served as tennis chairman, and Sweeney, with Ackley Sweeney Advertising, served as pickleball chairman.

Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network, based in Allentown, is a nationally recognized rehabilitation leader, offering care for people with physical and cognitive disabilities. Good Shepherd treats 65,000 patients annually at more than 60 locations in Pennsylvania.

WITCHES BALL: Friday the 13th will be extra frightening this year at the Witches Ball for Charity 8 p.m-midnight Oct. 13 at the Comfort Suites, 120 W. Third St, Bethlehem. Guests should come in their best Halloween costumes for this event to benefit the Star of Bethlehem Festival for Kids, a free event in May. Guests must be 21 or older and prizes will be awarded in various costume categories. Food, beer, soda and water are included with ticket and there will be a cash bar. SOUPER DAY: New Bethany Ministries will hold its 26th annual Souper Day luncheon at noon Oct. 17 at the Blue Event Center, 4431 Easton Ave., Bethlehem. Keynote Speaker will be Ashley Russo, executive producer and host of PEAK TV and president of ASR Media Productions. New Bethany Ministries program graduates will share stories of success. A TASTE OF THE SHADOWS: The Center for Vision Loss's signature vision loss awareness fundraiser, will be Oct. 19 at the Green Pond Country Club in Bethlehem Township. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres, a wine tasting by Franklin Hills Vineyards, a beer tasting by Allentown Beverage Co. and a New Focus raffle. During dinner, guests wear a blindfold to simulate vision loss. A sighted guide at each table acts as the "eyes" for the participants. CIVIC THEATRE GALA: Civic Theatre of Allentown "A Once in a Lifetime Event," its 90th anniversary gala 7-10 p.m.Oct. 27 at the NB Center for American Automotive Heritage, 540 Union Blvd., Allentown. The gala will honor Barry and Sharon Glassman. Actress Christine Taylor, a former Civic student and member of the celebrity committee for Civic's capital campaign, will be the celebrity guest.
