PCIS Ranger House delivers hope through emojis Students hold fundraiser for classmate facing rare disease

Old Colony Memorial - 5/31/2017

PLYMOUTH - Eighth-grade students from Ranger House at Plymouth Community Intermediate School recently stepped up for a fellow student facing a rare disease.

Approximately 25 students held an emoji event to raise funds and awareness for Myhre Syndrome. According to WebMD, Myhre Syndrome is "an extremely rare inherited disorder characterized by mental retardation, short stature, unusual facial features and various bone (skeletal) abnormalities."

Special education teacher Michelle Spain coordinated the effort after learning that a student had recently been diagnosed with the syndrome. There are only 55 documented cases of the disease in the world.

Students sold emojis to fellow students during lunches earlier this month. Buyers were able to customize the emojis and dedicate them to friends before the emojis were attached to posters in the cafeteria.

The Ranger House students sold 1,135 emojis, raising $567.50 for MassGeneral Hospital'sMyrhe Syndrome Clinic.
