Trout derby reels in more than 100 in Frackville

Republican & Herald - 5/22/2017

May 22--FRACKVILLE -- More than 100 people came out to show support for autism awareness Sunday during the second Black Diamond Autism Trout Derby at Whippoorwhill Dam.

"Here fishy, fishy, fishy," said Chet Martz, 49, of Frackville, as he waited for a fish to bite.

He caught five or six fish as of 12:30 p.m., most of which he threw back.

"I love the outdoors. It's the greatest thing ever. Everybody should enjoy the outdoors," he said.

Proceeds from the event sponsored by Diamond Charity Group went to support children with autism.

About 500 trout were donated by Gordon Fish & Game. The South End Field and Stream Fish and Game Association also gave its support to the event.

Prizes were awarded based on the size of the fish. The top prize of $50 was awarded to the longest fish, which was 17 inches. There was also a 50/50 drawing, with the winner taking home $115.

Christopher Romero, 2, of Hazleton, caught a brook trout that measured 10 7/8 inches. He proudly displayed his fish as it attempted to wiggle from the line.

Chanse Felty, 15, of Ashland, said he caught 20 fish. While he did use other lures, his secret weapon was what he called a gold trout magnet. It resembled the swimming action of a real worm, he said.

Ken Yurkonis and Jeanmarie Brayford, co-event coordinators with Diamond Charity Group, said the event was well attended.

"It went excellent. Everybody had a good time," Yurkonis said.
