Watauga community gathers to celebrate Special Olympics

Community members came together on April 27 to celebrate the spring Watuaga Special Olympics at Watauga High School.

In attendance were approximately 140 athletes, 50 volunteers, county officials and other community members.

Athletes participated in track and field events, a softball throw, bocce, aquatics and volleyball.

"Special Olympics is important because it provides so much to so many," Special Olympics Coordinator Keron Poteat said. "Through their efforts, competition and achievement, our athletes gain confidence and pride. Through their dedication and commitment, our volunteers gain purpose. It's a win-win situation for everyone."

The design used for the event shirts was created by Bud Bryan, a 10-year-old student at Hardin Park.

Poteat said despite the windy weather, the games went well.

"The barometer of success can be measured from the smiles on the faces of our athletes," Poteat said. "Judging by that, the day was over the top."

The North Carolina Special Olympics summer games are taking place June 2-4 in Raleigh.
