Special Olympics canceled because of expected bad weather

The Herald-Dispatch - 5/4/2017

HUNTINGTON - The Cabell County Special Olympics, scheduled for Friday, May 5, has been canceled due to expected inclement weather, according to a release from Cabell County Schools.

According to the National Weather Service website, Friday will have a high near 62 and a low around 45. There is a 50 percent chance of rain.

Organizers said the decision was made to avoid any chance of injury or illness due to the weather.

"We are so sorry to make this decision," said Karen Veazey, director of special education for Cabell County Schools, in the release. "We know how much our athletes and volunteers look forward to this event. Cool temperatures and rain would make for an unpleasant event for all involved."

With high school finals and many end-of-the-year events scheduled, organizers could not identify a makeup date that would work this school year. However, they are looking at the possibility of conducting a fall event.
