BRIEF: #JrsRaisingAwareness for autism

Dickinson Press - 4/29/2017

April 29--Students at Prairie Rose Elementary got a chance to eat some cupcakes at the end of the day on Friday, however, those cupcakes were not without a purpose.

Ashley Powers provided the school with about 500 cupcakes as a way to raise awareness for autism that had the tagline "#JrsRaisingAwareness." Her 7-year-old son Jr. has mild to moderate autism. She said she wanted to do this because she wanted to start a conversation about autism so more people can learn more about it.

"I just want people to be aware of autism more so that they know how to handle it, they know how to deal with kids they see in public and not just react to kids the wrong way because they don't understand it," she said.

It was also important for her to show other single mothers that they can do it on their own.

"It's just been me and Jr. his whole life," she said. "The parents that are alone, I know it gets hard sometimes and I just want them to know not to give up ever."

Powers also said that the students at Prairie Rose have been learning a little bit about autism during the week. She hopes these conversations will go home and continue to spread from there.
