Special Olympics team, local celebs go head-to-head for charity

March 18--The Huron County Bears, the Special Olympics basketball team supported by the Huron CountyBoard of Developmental Disabilities, will be shooting hoops at Norwalk High School with area law enforcement, service and business professionals at 6 p.m.March 23 to benefit the Salvation Army of Norwalk.

"We had a tremendous response to our request for players," said Kari Smith, HCBDD's superintendent. "There were so many professionals who were interested in being a part of this game, which we deeply appreciate. There will be a lot of subbing to get all the players out on the court, but we guarantee that everyone will have fun."

Smith went on to explain that the event was developed as part of the celebration of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, which typically is in March in Ohio. While there will be no charge for admission to the game, donations of canned goods and other nonperishable food items will be accepted at the door. There will be 50/50 drawings throughout the game and various prizes given out at halftime. The HCBDD self-advocate group will be selling pizza and other items at the concession stand to raise funds for the group members to attend conferences and learn more about their rights and responsibilities as citizens.

"We felt this game was a good way to connect with the community, allowing our players to give something back by raising donations for the Salvation Army and increasing awareness of the Special Olympics program," Smith said. "It's a true win/win."
