Mercer Co. Special Olympics holds showcasing event

Bluefield Daily Telegraph - 2/3/2019

Feb. 03--BLUEFIELD, Va. -- The Mercer County Special Olympics held a showcasing event to allow SO athletes to get out and have fun.

Athletes filled the dome gymnasium of Bluefield College and enjoyed their time together. Bluefield College generously offered the dome gymnasium to the event.

Though the organization is based in Mercer County, they also have their foot in Virginia as well.

Amidst the multiple sports taking place, volunteers stood by ensuring all athletes were happy and healthy.

Shirley Martin, the SO director of Mercer County, said, "This is more or less a showcasing to see how many athletes we have interested."

According to Martin, the Mercer County SO has been limp for several years after she stepped back from the director's position. Now that she is back as the director, she is ready to get the organization up and running again.

"Today is really a kick off to the program again," Martin said.

Inspired by her son with Down Syndrome, Martin is passionate about aiding the special needs community. "Events like this give my son something to do and make friends," Martin said.

The SO community allows athletes to network amongst each other and create bonds.

The organization offers a wide variety of sports to the athletes to ensure everyone enjoys their time.

Those wishing to become an athlete must first complete a medical form, according to Martin.

"We welcome ages eight to ninety-nine and beyond. We also welcome any ability level as well. We will accommodate any athlete and make the sport work for them," Martin said.

The Mercer County SO is actively searching for volunteer coaches. Those with coaching experience, or simply those who wish to help coach the sports, are welcome to volunteer.

To contact Martin for more information call her at 304-920-9871, or email her at s_joan_martin@yahoo.com.

The programs offered to the athletes and their families are all completely free of charge. -- Contact Emily D. Coppola at ecoppola@bdtonline.com
